What This License Is
An Alabama Life license lets you sell life insurance and annuity products to people and businesses in Alabama. It is issued by the Alabama Department of Insurance.
Licensing runs through the same process as every Alabama producer line — the difference is the focused Life exam.
Exam Options & Format
The Life exam is Life (University of Alabama): 125 questions, 2 hr 30 min, $50 single line per attempt. Passing standard: 87 correct of 125.
Alabama also offers the combined exam (Life & Health: 150 questions, 3 hr, $75), which licenses both lines in one sitting. If there is any chance you will sell health products later, the combined exam is usually the better value.
No pre-licensing course required
This is the headline. As of January 1, 2024, Alabama dropped the pre-licensing certificate requirement entirely. You are free to register and sit for the exam without completing an approved course first.
That said - 'not required' is not the same as 'not a good idea.' The Alabama exam is dense and almost nothing on it is answerable by common sense. A prep course or study guide (The University of Alabama sells an official one, and providers like Kaplan and Achievable have full courses) is still the smart play if you're new to the material.
Fingerprinting and background check
Alabama requires a fingerprint-based state and federal background check for all new resident applicants. ALDOI only accepts prints submitted through Fieldprint - prints taken anywhere else, or for any other purpose, will be rejected.
Timing matters here: get fingerprinted AFTER you pass the exam and ideally one day before you submit your application. Your prints stay in the ALDOI system for only 30 days, so don't print early and let them expire.
Applying for your license
You apply online through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). The initial resident producer license fee is $80, plus a small NIPR transaction fee (around $5.60). You'll upload proof of citizenship and provide your SSN or FEIN, and you must be at least 18 and an Alabama resident.
After you submit, allow a few business days. Check the ALDOI license search under Producers/Agents - once it shows issued, you can print your license straight from the site. Most candidates are fully licensed within a week of applying.
What it costs
Budget roughly $200 in hard costs for a combined Life & Health license: $75 exam + about $47 fingerprinting + $80 application (plus the small NIPR fee). Skip pre-licensing and that's the whole bill; add a prep course if you want one and you're looking at $400-$500 all in.
Renewal and continuing education
Alabama licenses renew every two years, due by the last day of your birth month. To renew you'll complete 24 hours of continuing education per cycle, including 3 hours of ethics. You can renew up to 90 days before the expiration date.
Let a license lapse for more than 12 consecutive months and you're back to square one - you'll have to retest and re-fingerprint before reapplying. So calendar that birth-month deadline.
