Oklahoma Insurance Exam Guide

Oklahoma Life Insurance Exam 2026

Oklahoma offers a standalone Life line of authority — a focused alternative to the combined Life & Health license for producers who only need this line. The exam is 105 total (100 scored + 5 pretest) questions in 2 hr. The licensing process itself — application, background check, and continuing education — works the same as for any Oklahoma producer license. Here is the Life-only path, and when the combined exam is the smarter buy.

What This License Is

An Oklahoma Life license lets you sell life insurance and annuity products to people and businesses in Oklahoma. It is issued by the Oklahoma Insurance Department.

Licensing runs through the same process as every Oklahoma producer line — the difference is the focused Life exam.

Exam Options & Format

ExamQuestionsTime
Life — Life Producer (PSI) 105 total (100 scored + 5 pretest) 2 hr
Life, Accident & Health or Sickness Producer (combined) — combined alternative 155 total (150 scored) 2 hr 30 min

The Life exam is Life Producer (PSI): 105 total (100 scored + 5 pretest) questions, 2 hr, $38 per attempt. Passing standard: 70%.

Oklahoma also offers the combined exam (Life, Accident & Health or Sickness Producer (combined): 155 total (150 scored) questions, 2 hr 30 min, $38), which licenses both lines in one sitting. If there is any chance you will sell health products later, the combined exam is usually the better value.

i
Life-only vs. combined
Take the single-line exam if your role genuinely never touches health lines. If it might, the combined exam earns both lines of authority in one sitting.

Background check (no fingerprints)

Unlike most states, Oklahoma does not require producers to be fingerprinted. Instead, a state and federal criminal-history background check is run as part of the license application. Applications can be denied for a criminal conviction, a withheld or deferred judgment, or a pending charge — so disclose accurately.

There's no separate WebCheck appointment or fingerprint fee to budget for, which is part of what keeps Oklahoma's total cost of entry low.

Filing your license application

After passing, wait about 3 business days for your result to reach NIPR/SBS and the state, then apply online at the OID licensing site (the “NEW APPLICATION” button) through NIPR. Read every instruction — incomplete applications are delayed or rejected without a refund.

OID is paperless: once approved (typically 5–7 business days for a clean producer file), you're notified by email and print your own license from the OID licensing portal. You must hold an active license before you sell, solicit, or negotiate insurance.

Renewal and continuing education

Resident producer licenses are issued for two years and renew by the last day of your birth month, through NIPR. The resident renewal fee is $60, and you can file up to 90 days early — but all CE must be posted to your OID record first.

The CE bar is 24 hours per biennium including 3 hours of ethics. Let a license lapse and you can still get it reissued within 12 months without retesting; past 12 months, you're back to taking the exam again.

!
CE before you renew
You can't renew with CE outstanding. OID won't process the renewal until your required hours are posted to your record.

Annuity and long-term care training gates

Two product-specific training requirements sit outside the exam but gate what you can sell. Before selling annuities, you must complete a one-time 4-hour annuity Best Interest course (aligned with the suitability rules in 36 O.S. § 4429 and Reg. 365:10-5-48). Before selling long-term care, you need an initial 8-hour NAIC LTC course plus a 4-hour LTC refresher each renewal period.

The LTC course credits count toward your 24-hour CE total, so they do double duty. Resident agents can complete these in any state as long as the course is approved for the relevant credit.

i
Don't sell before you train
Selling annuities or LTC without the required course on file can jeopardize your authority for those products — complete them before you solicit, not after.

Oklahoma life & health law on the exam

Roughly the first third of the regulation content is Oklahoma-specific. Know the Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association Act (36 O.S. § 2022–2025), the Standard Nonforfeiture Law (36 O.S. § 4029–4030), accelerated-benefits rules (Reg. 365:10-5-101), and credit life/A&H regulation (Reg. 365:10-5-60 through 74).

Oklahoma also tests its mandated benefits and required offers (36 O.S. § 6060 series; § 1162, 7003), Medicare Supplement minimum standards (Reg. 365:10-5-125), small-employer health rules (36 O.S. § 6512–6527), and annuity suitability (36 O.S. § 4429). The minor's capacity to contract for insurance at 36 O.S. § 3606(B) is a favorite detail.

Life and health products you'll be tested on

The product half of the exam spans the full L&H catalog: whole life, term, universal life, endowment, joint and survivorship life, plus fixed, equity-indexed, and variable annuities and variable life. Group life, viatical settlements, and modified endowment contracts (MECs) round out the life side.

On the health side, expect limited-benefit and specified-disease plans, hospital indemnity, major medical, HMOs, PPOs, MEWAs, group health, credit disability, disability income, dental, the Medicare landscape (Advantage/Part C, Part D, Medicare Supplement), and long-term care — including Oklahoma's state income-tax deductibility of LTC premiums.
